Ingredients
For the Breadsticks:
1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
2 tbsp granulated sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
1 tbsp salt
For the Topping:
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl. Stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl (or stand mixer), combine flour, softened butter, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and knead until smooth and elastic (about 8-10 minutes).
- First Rise: Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Breadsticks: Punch down the dough, divide it into 12-14 equal pieces, and roll each piece into a 6-7 inch long rope. Place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Second Rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks with a towel and let them rise for 20-30 minutes.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Bake the Breadsticks: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Prepare the Topping: While baking, melt butter and mix in garlic powder and salt.
- Brush and Serve: Brush the hot breadsticks with the garlic butter mixture and serve warm.
Notes
For extra flavor, try sprinkling grated Parmesan cheese over the breadsticks before baking.
For a herbed twist, toss the warm breadsticks in parsley or rosemary.
You can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the garlic butter for a spicy kick.
